Common name:Coast Redwood, Redwood
Botanical name:Sequoia sempervirens

This fast-growing, aromatic tree has soft, dark green foliage with long needles appearing in flat sprays and brown, barrel-shaped cones that appear after 1 year. Its soft, red-brown bark is fiberous and furrowed. Particularly after mechanical damage, this tree will stump sprout to form new, young trees around the stump. Avoid planting in areas of high foot traffic.

This perennial will grow 1.5'-2.5' tall and 1'-2' wide. It has medium-size green leaves with lavender-blue flowers that bloom in summer.

Bloodgood Japanese Maple

Common name:Bloodgood Japanese Maple
Botanical name:Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

The Japanese Maple is a small tree standing only 20-25' high and 20' wide. Its outstanding foliage is a somber red and contrasts nicely with the bark. The tree also has a striking scarlet fall color.

Freeway Daisy, Trailing African Dai

Botanical name:Osteospermum fruticosum

This groundcover-small shrub will grow 1' tall, spreading 4' in a year. It has medium-size green leaves with lavender that have a dark purple center. The flower color changes to white the next day! The flowers bloom in fall and winter but in mild coastal areas, may bloom all year. It needs well draining soil. This plant looks great on a hillside or in a hanging basket.

Botanical name:Lobularia maritima

Lobularia maritima is an annual. It is a low branching, trailing plant to 1' tall, with narrow or lance-shaped leaves .5"-2" long. There are tiny, four-petaled, white flowers crowded in clusters.

Sago-Palm

Common name:Sago-Palm
Botanical name:Cycas revoluta

Sago Palm resembles small palms; it is evergreen. It can slowly grow to 10'. It is used for a tropical effect and also looks great in planters. In the low desert, light shade and additional moisture are best. Side sprouts can form multi-trunked individuals. Apply fertilizer at leaf expansion. This plant has few pests.

Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo

Botanical name:Nandina domestica 'Nana Compacta'

The ' Nana Compacta' is a small, rounded shrub that grows from 12"-15" high. Its growth habit is dense, and the leaves become bright red in color in cold, winter areas. It can receive sun to part shade, and is used well as an accent plant.

Australian Fuchsia

Common name:Australian Fuchsia
Botanical name:Correa pulchella

A mounding shrub that grows to 3' tall and 6'-8' wide, the Correa pulchella exhibits typical, dark green foliage with a heavy show of pendant, clear pink flowers in winter and spring. When in bloom, the plant is very showy. With good drainage, the plant is tolerant of most soils. It grows best in sun to part shade, but will tolerate mostly shade if kept on the dry side. -Monterey Bay Nursery

Lily of the Nile

Common name:Lily of the Nile
Botanical name:Agapanthus praecox ssp. orientalis

This evergreen shrub will grow about 3' tall and has large green leaves with blue flowers that bloom in spring and summer. It will grow in all soils but prefers loam soil. It can be grown in sun or shade. Lily of the Nile prefers a moderate amount of water; established plants have low water use.
