The clumping Pennisetum is most effectively used in mass plantings where the dark, almost black flowers can wave in the wind. Should be cut back annually to promote fresh growth. Should not be planted near natural areas.

This variety of pine is both rigid and twisted, with needles of 3"-4". It has an irregular shape, and the short, contorted branches produce a canopy-shaped tree. The buds are white, and the cones are egg-shaped and without prickles.

Japanese Boxwood is often used as a hedge. It is compact, with small bright green leaves. It can reach 4-6' tall and wide or be kept smaller through pruninig. It can be sheared to shape. It does better in areas with milder winters. It prefers full sun and a moderate amount of water.
